[Contents] As Mercedes-Benz sought to expand its lineup with the large S-Class, mid-size E-Class, the 2-door sporty SL-Class, and more, the compact 190E made its debut in 1982, fitted with a 2-liter engine in a compact body that also fit within Japan's small-car (5-number) regulations. Though small in size, its mechanicals and build quality were said to rival the mid-size E-Class, and it earned very high praise for its typically Mercedes-Benz solid, no-nonsense character.
In Japan too, it left a strong impression as a favorite second car among wealthy celebrities.
The car was initially offered only as a 2-liter model aimed at family use, but larger-displacement versions were later released, and in 1986, sport grades were introduced: the 2.3-16, fitted with a 2.3-liter inline-4 DOHC engine modified by the British racing engine manufacturer Cosworth, and its later, larger-displacement version, the 2.5-16, which earned homologation for DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) and FIA Group A regulations.
The motif Hot Wheels chose was the ultimate version, the Evolution II, of which 500 units were produced in 1990; key features are the over-fenders fitted to accommodate its large-diameter wheels and wide tires, and its massive rear wing.
This release comes in a ZAMAC (zinc-plated) finish, giving it a hard-edged look fitting for a German car.
