[Contents] The origin of today's GR86 can be traced back to the sport-grade Levin and its sister car the Sprinter Trueno, which debuted in 1972 as high-performance models of the 2nd-generation Corolla.
Its development involved fitting the 1.6-liter DOHC engine from the higher-class specialty car, the Celica GT, into a 2-door version of the small, mass-market Corolla—anticipating the growing demand from motorsports (rally/circuit racing) that was beginning to take off in Japan in the 1970s. The visual distinction from a regular Corolla was the bolt-on overfenders fitted to all four wheels.
While this car was sold exclusively in Japan, its successor, the AE86 Levin and its sister car the Sprinter Trueno, has since become world-famous, and this original model is now globally regarded as a legendary car. In Japan, it is often called "Ni-Nana Levin" ("27 Levin") after its model code TE27.
Hot Wheels recreates this car with all-new tooling, customized with a rear spoiler and chin spoiler. Note that the car name on the card is written in Japanese.
