●Famous as the home base of the Hojo clan.
The current main keep of Odawara Castle was reconstructed in 1960. It was selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles in 2006.
Odawara Castle's main keep consists of three parts: a single-story minor keep, a connecting turret, and a 3-tiered, 4-story main keep. Although the main keep appears to have 3 tiers from the outside, the first tier is actually divided into 2 floors, making it a 4-story keep in total.
This was a consideration made to avoid displeasing the shogunate, which disliked overly large keeps, and there are similar examples at other castles where the keep was designed to appear smaller than it actually is.
