[Contents] The Group 5 "Silhouette Formula" category was born out of a 1976 FIA regulation revision. Any production car built in an annual volume of 400 or more units could serve as the base vehicle, and extensive modifications to both the exterior and interior were permitted. As a result, while the bodywork retained the look of the production car, the mechanical components -- both chassis and engine -- were, in most cases, rebuilt into something entirely different from the production model, leading to the name "Silhouette Formula": a formula car whose outline, viewed from the side, could still just about pass for the production car it was based on.
Among these, by far the fastest was the Porsche 935, built on the base of the 911, and automakers developed their own Silhouette Formula machines with the goal of "beating the 935."
The BMW 320 Group 5, which Hot Wheels chose as its subject, was one of these. Based on the 3 Series, BMW's best-selling model, it was fitted with a 2-liter inline-4 turbo tuned up to 600 horsepower, showing speed that rivaled the 935 and earning numerous victories.
