The RX-7 debuted in 1978 as a dedicated RE vehicle under the name Savanna RX-7. The 2nd generation followed in 1985, and the 3rd generation in 1991, before the model's history came to a close in 2003.
The Hot Wheels model is based on the 3rd-generation RX-7, characterized by its organic form using many curved surfaces, commonly nicknamed "FD" after its model code (FD3S).
