[Contents] Subaru (then Fuji Heavy Industries) succeeded in turning around its struggling business when the all-new Legacy, launched in 1989, became a massive hit. The Impreza, released in 1992 as the successor to the long-standing mainstay model the Leone, was also well received, and riding this momentum, Subaru's third arrow was the Forester, released in 1997.
The Forester combined a 4WD system and boxer engine inherited from the Legacy with a tall station wagon body offering excellent interior space. As a pioneer of what would now be called a crossover or SUV, it went on to win new Subaru fans around the world.
What Hot Wheels has lined up as a new-tooling item for this "Modern Classics" release is the STi, the sport grade offered on the 2nd-generation Forester, unveiled in 2002.
The STi was equipped with an engine tuned up to 265 horsepower, a 6-speed manual transmission, and dedicated sport suspension, along with a stiffened body, aero parts, and high-performance brakes. Though a Japan-only model, it is recognized worldwide, as evidenced by the fact that it has now been made into a Hot Wheels car.
