[Contents] In 1971, Mazda (then known as Toyo Kogyo) released the Savanna, a mid-size car (in the Japanese market) dedicated to the rotary engine (RE).
Overseas, the Savanna name was not used, and the car was instead called the RX-3.
Instead of the up-and-down motion of cylindrical pistons in a conventional reciprocating engine, the RE generates power through the rotational motion of uniquely shaped pistons called rotors, resembling rice balls—at the time, it was synonymous with Mazda's cutting-edge technology. The RE was compact yet powerful, and the Savanna was also highly regarded as a base vehicle for competition cars.
A symbol of this was how the Savanna broke down the dominance of the Skyline GT-R, which had shown unbeatable strength in Japanese touring car racing from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, eventually driving it out entirely (the GT-R withdrew) in 1972.
With this image, it also became popular for regular Savanna owners to customize their own cars in race-car style, but at the time, the works overfenders that race cars used to fit wide tires were illegal, giving the style an outlaw feel.
Hot Wheels finishes this model with a color scheme based on a Liberty Walk vehicle customized in the style of the machine of Yoshimi Katayama, a legendary RE driver.
