[Contents] The Sunny Truck, commonly known as the “Sunitora,” was introduced in 1967 as a variant of Nissan’s mass-market Sunny. Its rear section was redesigned as a truck bed, giving it a 500 kg payload capacity.
Hot Wheels chose the second-generation Sunny Truck, introduced in 1971, as its subject. This generation proved to be long-lived, remaining in production until 1994 in Japan and 2008 overseas.
Although the Sunny Truck was originally a commercial vehicle, it was fun to drive. Once available as a used car, it became popular as a “hobby vehicle” for tuning the engine and customizing the body.
The Nissan Hardbody, meanwhile, is based on the export version of the D21, known in Japan as the ninth-generation Datsun Truck. It depicts a truck with an extreme “slammed” stance, finished in the traditional American “truckin’” custom style that gives pickup trucks a pop, sporty image.
