[Contents] As Mercedes-Benz sought to expand its lineup beyond the large S-Class, mid-size E-Class, sporty 2-door SL-Class, and other models, the compact 190E made its debut in 1982. It featured a 2-liter engine in a compact body that also met Japan’s small-car (5-number) regulations. Despite its small size, its mechanicals and build quality were said to rival those of the mid-size E-Class, earning high praise for its typically Mercedes-Benz solid, no-nonsense character.
In Japan, too, it made a strong impression as a favorite second car among wealthy celebrities.
Initially offered only as a 2-liter model aimed at families, it was later joined by larger-displacement versions. In 1986, sport grades were introduced: the 2.3-16, fitted with a 2.3-liter inline-four DOHC engine modified by British racing engine manufacturer Cosworth, and its later, larger-displacement successor, the 2.5-16, which was homologated for the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) and FIA Group A regulations.
Hot Wheels chose the ultimate version as its inspiration: the Evolution II, of which 500 units were produced in 1990. Its key features are the overfenders fitted to accommodate its large-diameter wheels and wide tires, and its massive rear wing.
This release has a ZAMAC (zinc-plated) finish, giving it a hard-edged look befitting a German car.
