[Contents] The Savanna was a mid-size car (in the Japanese market) developed exclusively for the rotary engine (RE), released by Mazda (then known as Toyo Kogyo) in 1971.
Overseas, the Savanna name was not used; the car was instead called the RX-3.
Unlike the up-and-down motion of the cylindrical pistons in a conventional reciprocating engine, the RE generates power through the rotation of uniquely shaped pistons called rotors, which are shaped like rice balls. At the time, it was synonymous with Mazda's cutting-edge technology. The RE was compact yet powerful, and the Savanna was also highly regarded as a base car for competition.
The Savanna's success was symbolized by its breaking the Skyline GT-R's dominance in Japanese touring car racing. The GT-R had shown unbeatable strength from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, but the Savanna eventually drove it out of the sport in 1972 (the GT-R withdrew).
With this image, customizing regular Savannas in a race-car style also became popular. However, at the time, the works overfenders fitted to race cars to accommodate wide tires were illegal, giving the style an outlaw feel.
Hot Wheels has finished this model in a color scheme inspired by a Liberty Walk vehicle customized to resemble the machine driven by Yoshimi Katayama, a legendary rotary-engine racer.
