[Contents] The Skyline was released in 1957 as Prince Motor Company’s flagship model, before the company was absorbed by Nissan. Prince had long invested in motorsports to showcase its technical prowess, and one highlight was the GT, a competition car based on the second-generation Skyline.
The second-generation Skyline was a fuel-efficient family sedan powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. To win the 2nd Japanese Grand Prix, however, Prince Motor Company somewhat forcibly fitted it with the powerful 2-liter 6-cylinder engine from its large luxury sedan, the Gloria, extending the body as needed. The company built around 100 GTs to obtain homologation.
Despite being fully prepared for the 2nd Japanese Grand Prix, Prince was beaten to the overall victory by a Porsche 904 entered by a privateer. The Skyline GT, however, took all the remaining top positions. Since then, the Skyline GT has been beloved by car enthusiasts as the embodiment of the high-performance sedan.
Hot Wheels recreates the car with brand-new tooling. Its color scheme is based on the car driven by #39 Yoshikazu Sunako, who finished 2nd in the GT-II class behind the Porsche at the 2nd Japanese Grand Prix.
